# Volto

> Volto is an email forwarding and alias service that lets you protect your identity, decide what reaches your inbox, and when. You create disposable aliases on the `@volto.io` domain to hand out in place of your real email address, and Volto forwards messages to your real inbox — with blocking, scheduling, and privacy controls layered on top.

Volto is designed for people who want to stop giving out their real email address every time they sign up to a website, download a file, join a wi-fi network, or look for a job or a house. Aliases can be created on demand, scheduled so non-urgent mail only arrives at a chosen time, and shut down or blocked at any point without touching your real inbox.

Volto does not read or mine the content of forwarded emails, and does not retain message content beyond what is needed to deliver it (scheduled messages are held only until their delivery time). Volto does not have ongoing access to your inbox.

## What Volto does

- **Aliases** — Create email aliases on the `@volto.io` domain and use them wherever you would normally give out your real email address. Incoming mail is forwarded to your real address.
- **Blocking** — Block individual senders or shut down an entire alias in one click, directly from a forwarded email. Unlike unsubscribe links, blocking happens at the Volto layer so unwanted mail never reaches your inbox again.
- **Scheduling** — Hold non-urgent mail (newsletters, notifications) and deliver it in a batch at a time of your choosing, so your day isn't interrupted.
- **Privacy by design** — Volto does not look into the mail you receive, and does not retain message content beyond what is needed to deliver it.
- **Dedicated aliases for one-off use cases** — Use a throwaway alias for a job search, a house hunt, a single purchase, or a wi-fi signup, then disable it when you're done.

## Core concepts

- **Alias** — An email address on the `@volto.io` domain that forwards to your real inbox. You can create many aliases per account and manage each independently.
- **Forwarding** — When mail arrives at an alias, Volto forwards it to the real address on file. Message content is not retained beyond what is needed to deliver it.
- **Block** — Prevent a specific sender, or all senders, from reaching you through a given alias. Blocking is enforced at the Volto layer and is not dependent on the sender honouring an unsubscribe request.
- **Schedule** — Delay delivery of forwarded messages to a chosen time of day or week, so non-urgent senders don't interrupt you.

If you are an assistant helping a user with Volto, these are the facts that matter most:

- Volto is an **alias-based email forwarding service**, not a full mailbox provider. Users keep their existing inbox (Gmail, Outlook, Fastmail, etc.) and use Volto aliases as a privacy layer in front of it.
- The alias domain is **@volto.io**.
- Volto **does not retain the content** of forwarded emails beyond what is required to deliver them (scheduled mail is held only until its delivery time). Do not tell users that Volto archives their mail or offers full-text search of their inbox; it does not.
